Ocean City Police to Remind Drivers of LSV Safety Laws

With the increased use of low-speed vehicles (LSVs) in town, police will begin conducting special enforcement details to remind drivers of the importance of following the law when it comes to traffic safety in Ocean City.  LSVs (golf carts and similar vehicles) must be titled, registered and insured to operate on roadways, just as other automobiles must. They are limited to roads with a speed limit of 25 mph. Child restraints must meet the same standards as those used in passenger vehicles. Police have observed a number of LSVs in town operating in violation of these laws, according to a news release Thursday.

Hoy’s 5&10 is the Fun Place to Shop

Hoy’s 5&10 has been the fun place to shop for over 75 years. It is not your typical 5&10 store, but it does have items you remember from years ago, plus all of the latest toys and beach apparel. Hoy’s 5&10 has always been the “store” to shop at the Jersey Shore for everything you need for the beach but it offers so much more. With four locations in Avalon, Stone Harbor and two in Ocean City, each store is customized to its clientele, which means Hoy’s offers Stone Harbor souvenirs in Stone Harbor and Ocean City souvenirs in Ocean City.

Mayor’s Message: July 9

Mayor Jay Gillian announced Friday that the city has finished clearing the old car dealership lot next to the Community Center. The city acquired the land this year to be preserved as open space and plans to hold a town hall meeting in the fall to solicit ideas from the public for how best to use the property. In the meantime, the site will be used for residential parking, the mayor said in his weekly message to the public. His entire message follows.

Mayor’s Message: Storm Warning

Mayor Jay Gillian is warning that Elsa remains a strong storm, and any change in direction or timing could make a dramatic difference. The forecast calls for winds that could reach 50 mph and for rain that could exceed several inches. "We continue to track the system and hope that we are spared the worst. We have a few things working in our favor. Because the system is moving over land, storm surge and tidal flooding are not part of the forecast. The heaviest rain and strongest winds are expected to coincide with low tide in the overnight hours. And the system is moving fast. We should be in the clear in plenty of time for the weekend," the mayor said in a statement.

Ocean City Under Tropical Storm Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Ocean City as Elsa moves over the region. The fast-moving system is expected to affect Ocean City from Thursday evening through Friday morning. The main threat is from heavy rainfall – with 2 to 4 inches predicted and up to 6 inches possible in spots. At this time, southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are predicted. Tidal waters are not expected to reach flood levels.
