Code Blue in Effect in Cape May County

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management announced that all municipalities in Cape May County will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday. A Code Blue emergency is intended to protect homeless people who are living outside, on the streets, in parks or poorly insulated settings and who are at risk for cold-related exposure and possible death. People seeking shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling the county homeless hotline at 609-886-1325 or 1-877-886-1325 after hours.

Public Invited to Veterans Day Ceremony

Ocean City’s annual Veterans Day ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Ocean City Tabernacle, 550 Wesley Avenue. The ceremony will include music, remarks, prayer and the placing of a memorial wreath. Ocean City’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts sponsor and participate in the event. This year’s keynote speaker is E-4 Lance Corporal Rickey R. Arce. He joined the Marines just out of high school and fought the Taliban in Afghanistan during a deployment in 2009-2010.

Ocean City Gets Ready for the Holidays

Downtown Asbury Avenue is decorated for the holidays, and a full schedule of special events is coming up quickly. The celebrations in Ocean City begin with “Earlier Than the Bird” on Saturday, Nov. 23. The annual downtown shopping extravaganza takes place 8 a.m. to noon on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Details follow on other upcoming holiday events and entertainment.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on work scheduled for the week of Nov. 11-15.

Mayor’s Message: Nov. 8

Ocean City's beach replenishment project is expected to begin in early 2020, Mayor Jay Gillian announced Friday. Work will be done in January and February to restore the eroded beaches and dunes in the south end from 45th Street to Corson's Inlet State Park. The project will move to the north end beaches between Seaview Road and 12th Street beginning in April, the mayor said. The beaches are expected to be replenished by early June.

O.C. Girls Soccer Team Wins South Jersey Title

The Ocean City High School girls soccer team brought home the South Jersey Group 3 title Thursday, defeating the visiting Mainland Mustangs 6-0 behind a five-goal explosion in the second half. The win propels the Red Raiders into the tournament’s Final Four as they pursue what would be their first state championship in the school’s history. Ocean City will next play Hopewell Valley, the Central Jersey Group 3 winner, at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Toms River North High School.

Nominations Sought for MLK Award

Ocean City will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at two different events on Monday, Jan. 20: the Day of Service and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony and Soul Food Dinner. The event includes the honoring of Ocean City residents with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Services Award, and the city is currently seeking nominations from the public for this year’s honorees. The awards are given to citizens who exemplify the philosophy and ideas of the late civil rights leader.

The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce is honored to announce the recipient of the Chamber’s 2019 Citizen of the Year Award and Outstanding Business and Beautification Awards. The awards will be presented at the Chamber’s dinner Tuesday, Nov. 26 at The Flanders Hotel. This year, the Citizen of the Year Award will be presented to Carrie Merritt, a community leader and first grade teacher at the Ocean City Primary School.

O.C. School Board Returns Two, Adds Newcomer

Two incumbents and one challenger won three-year seats on the Ocean City Board of Education on Tuesday. J. Tiffany Prettyman, a current school board member, was the top vote getter with 1,876 votes. Her fellow incumbent, Gregory Whelan, received 1,575 votes, according to unofficial totals from the Cape May County Board of Elections. Challenger Patrick Kane won the third board seat, garnering 1,284 votes.

O.C. Soccer Team Wins, Advances to Title Game

The Ocean City High School girls soccer team is advancing to the South Jersey Group 3 finals for the second time in three years after defeating Toms River South 5-0 on Monday afternoon. The top-seeded Red Raiders will face the third-seeded Mainland Mustangs in the sectional championship game Thursday at Ocean City.
