O.C. Edges Long Branch for Playoff Win

An extra point kick blocked and an extra point kick converted were two of the biggest plays in Ocean City’s thrilling 21-20 win at Long Branch in the South Jersey Group 4 football playoffs Friday night. The Red Raiders advanced to their first sectional title game since 2000 with the win, a cliffhanger that came down to the final seconds.

Mayor’s Message: Nov. 15

Mayor Jay Gillian gives a wrap-up of major projects that are included in a $6 million bond ordinance approved by City Council on Thursday night. They include beach and dune replenishment projects and the renovation of the Ocean City Sports and Civic Center.

Special Weather Statement: Flood Watch

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Watch in effect for Ocean City from 8 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 17) through 5 p.m. Monday (Nov. 18). Strong northeast winds gusting to 45 mph are predicted for the weekend and into Monday, and the NWS warns of coastal flooding through at least three high tides. Rain is also in the forecast and could make conditions worse. An NWS “Watch” indicates that conditions for significant flooding are expected to develop.

ACUA to Host Open House Saturday For “America Recycles Day”

On Saturday, Nov. 16, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) will host an Open House in honor of America Recycles Day at the ACUA Recycling Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for residents to enjoy free activities and learn what happens to recycling after it is picked up at the curb. Guests can explore the Atlantic County recycling sorting facility during behind-the-scenes tours at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township. The tours give a look at how materials are sorted and prepared to be recycled into new products. Outside, kids will have the chance to climb into one of ACUA’s collection vehicles. The event will also feature crafts, games and an appearance by ACUA’s mascot, Supercan.

Code Blue in Effect in Cape May County

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management announced that all municipalities in Cape May County will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday. A Code Blue emergency is intended to protect homeless people who are living outside, on the streets, in parks or poorly insulated settings and who are at risk for cold-related exposure and possible death. People seeking shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling the county homeless hotline at 609-886-1325 or 1-877-886-1325 after hours.

Public Invited to Veterans Day Ceremony

Ocean City’s annual Veterans Day ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Ocean City Tabernacle, 550 Wesley Avenue. The ceremony will include music, remarks, prayer and the placing of a memorial wreath. Ocean City’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts sponsor and participate in the event. This year’s keynote speaker is E-4 Lance Corporal Rickey R. Arce. He joined the Marines just out of high school and fought the Taliban in Afghanistan during a deployment in 2009-2010.

Ocean City Gets Ready for the Holidays

Downtown Asbury Avenue is decorated for the holidays, and a full schedule of special events is coming up quickly. The celebrations in Ocean City begin with “Earlier Than the Bird” on Saturday, Nov. 23. The annual downtown shopping extravaganza takes place 8 a.m. to noon on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Details follow on other upcoming holiday events and entertainment.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on work scheduled for the week of Nov. 11-15.
