Police Chief Achieves Advanced Certification

The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police announced that Ocean City Police Chief John J. “Jay” Prettyman has been awarded advanced certification. “Chief Prettyman has continued Ocean City’s proud and exemplary tradition of public safety,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “Only a third of New Jersey’s police chiefs have achieved certification, and far fewer have reached advanced certification.” The certification program is designed to encourage the highest ethical and professional standards possible for law enforcement throughout the state, and the process is extremely rigorous.

Ocean City Christmas Parade Unfolds Friday

Ocean City’s annual Christmas Parade travels down Asbury Avenue at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. Lights, garland, wreaths and bows adorn “The Avenue” for the season, and the parade will bring a variety of bands, floats and other entries to add a little warmth to the winter. The event gives spectators time to shop and dine on downtown Asbury Avenue before and after the 6 p.m. start time. The parade starts at Sixth Street and proceeds to 11th Street. Postal Food Drive Dec. 7

Letter carriers across the country, in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, will be collecting food for families in need on Saturday, Dec. 7. In Ocean City, carriers ask that residents collect and bag non-perishable food items, then place them by their mailboxes for pickup on Saturday. All food will be donated to the Ocean City Ecumenical Council Community Food Cupboard.

Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on work scheduled for the week of Dec. 2 to 6.

Local Coaches Launch Sports Training and Instruction Company

A new local business venture built on a foundation of sports, coaching and giving back to the community showed its stuff on Saturday. RA Development Academy, founded by Tyrone Rolls and Jill and Tom Adamson, is a coaching and training business that provides everything from one-on-one and group instruction in specific sports to clinics, camps and tournaments. The firm hosts a wide range of such events for young athletes and area coaches, and will also design and deliver turnkey operations for clients who wish to stage events of their own. On Saturday, RA Development Academy ("R" for Rolls, "A" for Adamson) hosted a field hockey clinic that featured instruction by guest coaches, Ocean City’s own Julia Herrington and teammate Eva Smolenaars, members of the University of North Carolina Tarheels, the nation’s number one ranked field hockey team...

County Declares “Code Blue” in Cold Weather

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management has declared “Code Blue” conditions from Sunday night to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3. People seeking temporary shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling the County Homeless Hotline Service at 1-877-886-1325 or 609-886-1325.

St. Peter’s to Hold Holiday Concert Dec. 14

Tenor John Taylor joins the 55-voice Angelus Chorus directed by Richard Stanislaw in a concert of traditional Christmas music, Saturday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Eighth and Central Avenue in Ocean City. The program includes Taylor singing “O Holy Night” and several other selections. He combines with the Chorus for “God Bless Us Every One,” made famous by Andrea Bocelli.

Search on For Missing Kite Surfer Near O.C.

The Coast Guard is searching for a missing kite surfer near Ocean City on Thanksgiving evening. Coast Guard Station Atlantic City watchstanders received a call from 911 notifying them of a kite surfer reportedly wearing all black seen drifting out to sea after falling off a kiteboard approximately 500 yards off Corson Inlet at around 3:20 p.m.

Remembering Inky, the Thanksgiving Whale

It was 1994 on Thanksgiving Day when a female pygmy sperm whale ended up stranded on a beach in Longport. Police and volunteers gave up their dinners to watch over the whale until the Marine Mammal Stranding Center arrived. The whale was in very poor condition and wouldn’t survive without immediate care. It was transported to the stranding center, a flurry of phone calls were made, and the Coast Guard agreed to airlift the dolphin-sized whale by helicopter to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. When she arrived in Baltimore she was weak, dehydrated and in shock. There were no obvious signs of any sickness or injuries. She had poor muscle tone and seemed malnourished. Marine veterinarians could not figure out what was wrong and they didn’t expect her to live ...

O.C. Police Catch Car Burglar

The Ocean City Police Department has charged a 17-year-old male from Atlantic City with the theft of two motor vehicles, both recovered by police, and over 65 burglaries of motor vehicles and the theft of items from those same motor vehicles, according to a press release. A majority of the incidents occurred this past week. However, some of the incidents date back to July of 2019.
