When Cape May County Freeholder E. Marie Hayes wrote a Letter to the Editor and sent it to local news outlets, she put her private life in the spotlight, much more than any time sparring in political debates, on the campaign trail or speaking in public. She told of how she endured pain, grief and anguish, that she was sexually assaulted, long before the “Me Too” movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault, and when she was even too young to go to school. A family friend, now deceased, abused her when she was growing up, she said. And although decades had gone by, nightmares continued to haunt her until Hayes, a retired law enforcement captain who helped so many people in her career, got the help she needed to live the best life she could, without hiding the past.

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work will be done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on construction work scheduled for the week of Jan. 20 to 24.

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management advises that all Cape May County municipalities will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory from 6 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. People seeking shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling 2-1-1.

Jill Adamson discovered a secret about her new business not long after it was up and running. “Once we clearly defined our mission statement, we began to meet like-minded people,” said Adamson, who partners with her husband Tom Adamson and Tyrone Rolls on the youth sports venture. “We began to meet those who were on our same path.” That has made for a frantic few months of start-up activities for the partners, but it certainly is good news for youth sports in Ocean City. Late last year the Adamsons and Rolls founded and launched RA Development Academy, a coaching and training business providing youth sports clinics and leagues, one-on-one and group training in specific sports. RA, for Rolls and Adamson, hosts a wide range of such events for young athletes and local coaches, and will also design and deliver turnkey operations for clients wishing to stage such events...

The William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at Stockton University in Galloway Township will host a conversation with former White House Counsel Don McGahn 4 p.m. Jan. 23 at the college’s Performing Arts Center on the Galloway Township campus. The events is by invitation only and is not open to the general public. The media will cover the event. McGahn, an Atlantic County native, worked as chief counsel for the National Republican Congressional Committee and served on the Federal Election Commission...

For all those old movie buffs out there, the Ocean City Free Public Library is featuring a showing of the classic movie “Dead Reckoning.” The movie, from 1947, stars Humphrey Bogart and Lizabeth Scott. Tom Celandine will host the free event, which runs from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26 in the library's Christopher Maloney lecture hall.

The next “Fridays With Friends” event for local teenagers will be 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. The program invites teenagers to hang out together and participate in music, games and other activities. The event is for Ocean City and Upper Township students in grades 8 to 12. Teens must show a school identification, but there is no cost to participate. The next event will be held at the Ocean City Community Center (1735 Simpson Avenue). The events always include pizza and music. Special themes include ping pong, karaoke, swimming, self-defense instruction, wallyball, Xbox games and a movie.

On Friday, Jan. 17 at 12:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Free Public Library, AARP Chapter 1062 will feature local business owner Paula Popilock to discuss CBD (cannabidiol) for pain and anxiety relief. Popilock is the owner of The Road to Living Well, a business on Asbury Avenue. Popilock, who is certified in Cannabis Health from the University of Colorado, has done the research and will share her expertise with attendees at the AARP presentation.

The Ocean City boys basketball team got back on track with a dominant 60-26 win over the visiting Absegami Braves on Monday night. Gannon Brady led all scorers with 15 points, but the Red Raiders showed their depth with 11 different players scoring in the game.

Ocean City will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at two different events on Monday, Jan. 20: the Day of Service and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony and Soul Food Dinner. The ceremony, a long tradition in Ocean City, will be held at noon at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center of Ocean City High School. It brings the community together to remember King through words, song and dance. After the program, everybody is invited to a free soul food dinner in the high school cafeteria. Volunteers are also invited to join others nationwide in a Day of Service earlier on Jan. 20 to honor Dr. King’s contributions. Ocean City residents are asked to participate in a citywide cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon.
