Boy Scouts Host Annual Chili Cook-Off

Ocean City Boy Scout Troop 32 will host its fourth annual Super Bowl Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center. Prizes will be given to the top chefs for different varieties of chili based on votes received from the general public. The event is free for chef/participants, with $5 per person charged at the door for unlimited taste-testing guests.

Massive Fire, Explosion at Somers Point Storage Facility

An early morning fire Thursday tore through a self-storage facility, Sure Storage, at 5 Chestnut Street, causing an explosion and the loss of about 70 storage units, Somers Point Fire Chief Jim Somers said. “It looked like it started in one unit and spread quickly. It didn’t take much. It was really hot,” Somers said in an interview with SomersPoint.com, describing one of the buildings taken down to charred metal. There were no reported injuries in the 4:22 a.m. fire.

Property Tax Bills Due Feb. 1

The 2020 first quarter property taxes are due Feb. 1, with a 10-day grace period. Please be advised that postmarks are not accepted in accordance with the State of New Jersey tax laws, therefore the payment must be received by Feb. 10. Taxes can be paid online by visiting the Tax Collection web page at www.ocnj.us/tax. If you are using the bill pay feature with your bank, please allow seven to 10 days for your payment to reach the city.

OCHS Drama Guild Boosters Seek Sponsors For Fundraiser

The Ocean City High School Drama Guild Boosters are seeking donations and sponsorships from local business owners for their “Broadway Brunch by the Beach” fundraiser. The fundraiser will take place Sunday, March 8 at Greate Bay Country Club, 901 Somers Point-Mays Landing Road in Somers Point, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The OCHS Drama Guild Boosters are seeking assistance from local business owners to donate gift basket items and live auction items for the fundraiser.

Broadway and Children’s Theater Series Ticket Sales Coming Up

Tickets for two popular summer theater series in Ocean City will go on sale starting 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3. Details on those shows and other upcoming entertainment in Ocean City follow.

Code Blue Weather Advisory

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management advises that all municipalities in Cape May County will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday. A Code Blue emergency is intended to protect homeless people living outside, on the streets, in parks or poorly insulated settings and who are at risk for cold related exposure and possible death. People seeking shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling 2-1-1.

OCIS Presents: “Lion King Jr.”

The Ocean City Intermediate School presents “Disney: The Lion King Jr., ” the animated hit movie musical. Show dates are Jan. 30 and Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. at Ocean City High School's Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center.

Ocean City Falls to Mainland

The gym was standing room only. The energy was palpable. The game did not disappoint. The rivalry between Ocean City and Mainland came to a head Monday evening when the visiting Mustangs defeated the Red Raiders 62-58. Ocean City's Gannon Brady led all scorers with 22 points. The loss drops Ocean City to 7-7, while Mainland improves to 10-4 on the year.

Ocean City Wins Thriller Against Mainland

Ocean City scored a three-pointer to start the game Sunday evening and never looked back. The Red Raiders girls basketball team took down rival Mainland High School, 51-49, to improve to 10-5 on the season. With the loss, Mainland also stands at 10-5. Kylie Watson, a senior from Mainland, led all scorers with 22 points, while sophomore Marin Panico paced the Red Raiders with 18. In what was anticipated to be a hotly contested game, the storied rivalry of Ocean City and Mainland did not disappoint.

OCHS Adds Career Technical Education to Curriculum

Ocean City High School will be offering a Career Technical Education (CTE) program in the field of marketing/marketing management, according to a school release. In order to complete the Career Technical Education program, students must successfully complete the three-course requirement. This includes fashion marketing and merchandising, hospitality, tourism, and real estate services, and marketing and sports entertainment.
