Bay Avenue Construction Update

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work is being done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Details follow on construction work scheduled for the week of Feb. 10-17.

AARP Hosts Black History Month Speaker

On Friday, Feb. 21, AARP Chapter 1062 will host speaker Loretta Thompson Harris at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave., in honor of Black History Month. The free event will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the library's Room 111. Thompson Harris is a fourth generation Thompson to live in and around Ocean City. Her family is one of the earliest black families to make Ocean City their home.

Plastic Bag Recycling Now Available at Five Locations in Ocean City

Ocean City Intermediate School students, under the guidance and direction of the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority, are launching a new program to collect plastic bags and film packaging for recycling. Everybody is invited to drop off recyclable plastic at any one of five locations in Ocean City. Details follow on the locations.

Community Mourns the Passing of Mario Gallelli, 84, Local Business Owner

Mario Gallelli, 84, passed away on February 2, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Santa Caterina, Catanzaro, Italy on August 8, 1935 to Cecilia (Riillo) and Pasquale Gallelli. He married the love of his life Triestina (Paparo) September 3, 1961. He then migrated with his beautiful wife to America in 1962. They resided in South Philadelphia for almost 27 years. Mario opened his first business "Gallelli Brothers Auto Repair" in Lester, Pa which thrived for over 30 years. In 1989 Triestina and Mario then made the decision to move their entire family to Ocean City, NJ to begin a new endeavor by purchasing the Tahiti Inn & Apartments, which solidified Mario's business and family legacy. Code Blue Cold Weather Advisory

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management advises that all municipalities in Cape May County will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday. Code Blue conditions are in effect when the temperature falls to 32 degrees or lower. People seeking shelter in a warming center should contact their local municipality. Additional resources are available by calling 2-1-1.

Mayor’s Message: Feb. 7

Mayor Jay Gillian extended his condolences to the family of Mario Gallelli following the passing of the owner of the Tahiti Inn in Ocean City. "Mario was a faithful member of St. Damien Parish, he was beloved by many in town, and he was an important part of our local hospitality industry," Gillian said Friday in his weekly message to the public.

O.C. Rolls to 12th Straight Win

The Ocean City Red Raiders girls basketball team notched its 12th straight win Thursday night, defeating the visiting Absegami Braves, 41-25. The win brings the Red Raiders record to 13-5, while Absegami drops to 12-5. Ocean City is currently sitting in first place in conference play with a record of 10-0. Seniors Delaney Lappin and Emma Finnegan and sophomore Marin Panico each scored 10 points to lead the Red Raiders.
