County Reports New COVID-19 Death

Cape May County officials announced Saturday the death of a 71-year-old Middle Township woman from the coronavirus. The total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in the county is now 653, including 50 deaths.

Mayor’s Message: Swimming Pool Questions

Mayor Jay Gillian said the city has been receiving questions from the public about restrictions on swimming pools. He emphasized in a statement Friday that the city has taken no action to prevent pools from opening during the pandemic and does not have that authority anyway. Special Weather Statement: Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Ocean City from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thursday. Water levels are expected to peak in the hours around high tide on the bay side of Ocean City at 8:07 p.m. Forecasters project a tide of 5.5 feet on the mean low water scale (MLW). This projection falls just above the threshold for “minor” tidal flooding.

No New Daily Coronavirus Cases Reported in Cape May County

Cape May County is reporting no new daily cases of COVID-19 for the first time since April 5. “People have taken great personal responsibility in keeping safe and we have seen the results,” Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton said in a press release Wednesday. “As we continue to open up our state, we ask people to continue to be smart about keeping six feet distance or wearing a mask when proper social distancing can’t take place.”

County Confirms Two New COVID-19 Cases

Cape May County reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, but no new deaths. The total number of coronavirus cases in the county stands at 639, including 49 deaths, according to a press release. Meanwhile, New Jersey will be allowed to reopen with restrictions on June 15 as the state prepares to enter Stage 2 of its recovery from the pandemic. Beginning on June 15, outdoor dining at restaurants can begin, as can non-essential in-person retail.

Car Crash Ties Up Traffic

A car accident backed up traffic on the Route 52 Causeway bridge into Ocean City on Saturday. Police Department spokesman Lt. Pat Randles said no one was injured in the 1:55 p.m. crash at the intersection of Ninth Street and Bay Avenue, at the foot of the bridge.
