Mayor’s Message: June 12

Mayor Jay Gillian says the city is working with local retail shops and restaurants as they prepare to reopen on Monday, June 12. Retail stores will be allowed to offer indoor shopping and restaurants can have outdoor dining as the loosening of the statewide coronavirus restrictions continues. "The city is working with owners to make whatever reasonable accommodations we can to help them do business under the new guidelines," the mayor said in a statement Friday. Lower Township Woman Dies of COVID-19

A 71-year-old woman from Lower Township has become the latest Cape May County resident to die of the coronavirus. Altogether, the county has had 671 cases of COVID-19 and 56 deaths, according to the latest update by health officials.

Local Partnership Provides Free Dinners for Seniors

Two of Ocean City’s premier service groups are partnering with Cousin’s Restaurant to jointly fund a dinner program that is delivering meals to local senior citizens during these difficult times of social distancing. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, members from Morvay-Miley American Legion Post 524 and the Ocean City Exchange Club meet at the 1st Street and Asbury Avenue restaurant to pick up complimentary meals for elderly and medically-involved residents living in the Ocean City, Upper Township and Somers Point areas.

New Police Vehicle Helps for Beach Patrols

The Ocean City Police Department just unveiled a new off-road vehicle called the Mahindra Roxor that is reminiscent of the original Willys Jeep. The Roxor will enable officers to patrol the beach area while also allowing passenger space to assist transporting officers, medical staff, found children and water rescue equipment.

Bay Avenue Construction Halted Until Fall

Construction work on a Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority project that caused traffic headaches and detours on Bay Avenue for months is being halted for the summer, the city announced Tuesday. Mayor Jay Gillian said in a statement last week that he had asked the utilities authority to suspend work until the fall “due to the unsafe and unacceptable condition of the road.”

County Confirms Three COVID-19 Deaths

Three more Cape May County residents have died from COVID-19, health officials reported Monday. The total number of coronavirus cases has climbed to 659, including 53 deaths, according to a county press release. The latest deaths included an 82-year-old woman from Ocean City, a 55-year-old man from West Cape May and an 87-year-old woman from Dennis Township.

O.C. Flower Show Blooms “Virtually”

The Garden Club of Ocean City continued a 47-year-old tradition by holding its annual Ocean City Flower Show virtually this year. The show received more than 200 entries of garden displays and floral creations created by enthusiasts of all ages. The show was not formally judged this year, but the photo submissions from 70 top entries can be viewed on the Ocean City Music Pier Facebook page at facebook.com/MusicPier.

County Reports New COVID-19 Death

Cape May County officials announced Saturday the death of a 71-year-old Middle Township woman from the coronavirus. The total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in the county is now 653, including 50 deaths.

Mayor’s Message: Swimming Pool Questions

Mayor Jay Gillian said the city has been receiving questions from the public about restrictions on swimming pools. He emphasized in a statement Friday that the city has taken no action to prevent pools from opening during the pandemic and does not have that authority anyway. In the meantime, the city administration is "doing everything in its power" to have the governor reopen the economy and lift his restrictions on pools, the mayor said. His full statement follows.
