Paralyzed Cyclist Ends His Cross-Country Trip in Ocean City

Our journey through life is filled with potholes, detours and roadblocks. How you get through those obstacles is what builds strength and character. To find inspiration when struggling through those challenging times, you need to look no further than to the journey of Jared Fenstermacher. On Saturday, the 35-year-old Fenstermacher arrived in Ocean City, his final stop on his cross-country cycling trip. What makes this final stop so remarkable is that his cycling trip began on Aug. 11, 2016. 

Cape May County Opening New VA Clinic

The Cape May County freeholders are bringing enhanced and more accessible medical services to veterans in Cape May County. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is in the final stage of opening its new location for the Cape May VA Outpatient Clinic. It is anticipated to open in December 2020 and is located in the County Commons complex in Rio Grande, according to a county news release.

OCHS Football Team Tops Millville, 36-16

Ocean City High School’s undefeated football team scored both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball and added another touchdown off a kickoff return while rolling to a 36-16 win Friday night over visiting Millville at Carey Stadium. The Red Raiders (4-0) jumped out to a 22-8 halftime lead over the Thunderbolts (1-3) behind an 11-yard touchdown run by quarterback Joe Repetti and two interceptions returned for scores by Jake Schneider and Brad Jamison.

Mayor’s Message: Ocean City Plans Warm Welcome for Paralyzed Cross-Country Cyclist

Mayor Jay Gillian is inviting everyone to give a warm Ocean City welcome on Saturday to a cross-country cyclist who is finally completing his journey after he was struck by a truck in Iowa in 2016 and left paralyzed. Jared Fenstermacher is expected to arrive in Ocean City between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. Police and fire vehicles will meet him at the Ninth Street Bridge Welcome Center to escort him into town. "I’d love to see people cheer him on along his route into town: Down Ninth Street to Atlantic Avenue and up to the Music Pier via Eighth Street," Gillian said in his weekly mayor's message Friday. Fenstermacher, who is raising money for a nonprofit cancer foundation, was able to complete the final 1,200 miles of his trip on a bicycle propelled by his hands.

OCHS Soccer Team Blanks Wildwood Catholic

The undefeated Ocean City High School boys soccer program continued its winning ways Tuesday afternoon, defeating visiting Wildwood Catholic, 9-0. All nine scores were tallied by different Red Raider players, showcasing their depth of offensive firepower.

Grant Funding Expands COVID-19 Testing in Cape May County

New grant funding coming to Cape May County will expand testing capabilities for COVID-19 over six months. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC)-Enhancing Detection Grant comes through the New Jersey Department of Health for $552,513, it was announced Tuesday. Testing will be conducted four days a week for 26 weeks. Mobile testing will be conducted two days a week in all 16 municipalities on a rotating basis and another two days per week at the Cape May County Department of Health.

OCHS Showcases Seniors in Cross Country Dual Meet

The Ocean City High School boys and girls cross country programs honored their seniors with dominant performances over the visiting Middle Township Panthers on Monday afternoon. Both Red Raider teams posted perfect scores, 15-50, while taking the top seven spots on each side of the race. 

Businesses Affected by Pandemic Encouraged to Apply for NJEDA Grants

The Cape May County Business Recovery Task Force, Cape May County Economic Development and the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, under the direction of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, are encouraging all eligible county businesses that were affected by COVID-19 to pre-register and apply for Phase 3 Grant Assistance through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.
