Winter Takes A Break

So goodbye to bitter cold temperatures and snow..for now. Above normal temperatures have resumed and will be with us just about for the rest of the month. Temperatures will not reach the freezing mark until at least January 26th. The reason for the change, the Jetstream will remain to our north which will keep the Arctic Air from spilling into our region. Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure will set up along the East Coast allowing a South-Southwest flow to push daytime highs mainly in the 50s through the period.

Cold and A Little Wintry Mix Returns For The Weekend

A brief break in our mild stretch as we move into the weekend. A strong high pressure system is building to our north sending a cold shot of air our way. While it will not be nearly as cold as earlier this week, temperatures will return to around freezing early Saturday morning. Meanwhile, a weak disturbance will slide to our south which will spread a wintry mix during the afternoon Saturday...

Mild For Now…Wintry Mix For Saturday

A rollercoaster ride of temperatures as we head into the weekend. After a mild surge the last couple of days pushing temperatures into the 50s with gusty southwesterly winds, a stronger push of cold air will return for the weekend. In addition, we are also watching an area of low pressure which will slide to our south bringing the threat of some wintry weather for Saturday. Unlike last week, this system is weak and there is less cold air in place. Surface temperatures will be climbing above freezing during the day so any precipitation that falls could have a hard time sticking. As warmer air moves in aloft, a period of snow could change to sleet and then rain later in the day on Saturday...

Milder and Melting This Week

Now that the weekend winter storm is past us, it time to look ahead to this week. We will have one more day of frigid temperatures before the freeze eases. High temperatures on Monday will struggle to reach 30 degrees despite another bright sunny day. Watch for re-freezing at night as any melting that occurs during the day will ice up again after dark.

Winter Storm Update

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Cape May & Atlantic Counties for Saturday. Get ready for a significant coastal snowstorm to affect our area on Saturday. Models have generally come into agreement that the storm track that was once supposed to stay to our south and give us a brush with some snow has now inched closer to us. As a result, Snow amounts forecast from this morning have increased a bit. With temperatures in the 20s, snow will accumulate easily on roads and sidewalks. Snow will become heavy at times on Saturday with near-blizzard like conditions as winds will increase out of the north 20-25mph with gusts to 30mph+. Hazardous travel is expected especially during the late morning and early afternoon as the highest snowfall rates occur. Travel will be troublesome even after the storm ends by late afternoon and into the night as winds will cause blowing and drifting of snow...

Winter Storm Set For Saturday

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Ocean City for Saturday for the potential for several inches of snow. Now that the first system has moved away, the next storm is right on its heels. As I mentioned yesterday this 2nd storm is altogether different. Instead of a developing weak low pressure system with little moisture, like the first one, this one has plenty of moisture coming out of the Gulf of Mexico. This 2nd storm will cause major problems through the Southern States and up the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Highest snow total will be across Southeastern Virginia where 8”-12” of snow is expected. For us, the biggest question has always been how far north will the moisture get to our area...

Some Snow Is On The Way

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Ocean City from late tonight through 6am Friday for light accumulation snow which will make roads and sidewalks slippery. This week we have been following 2 separate snow events. The 1st low pressure system will develop off of North Carolina tonight and quickly move offshore. Precipitation could begin as rain especially if it starts before midnight. Steadier snow will fall after midnight and end just by sunrise...

2 Chances Of Snow Late This Week

It looks as if we are going to see our first and possibly 2nd snow of the season. Unlike most snow events, Coastal NJ should receive the most snow in the entire state. Fortunately, both these systems are fast movers and snow amounts should be limited. Cold air will move in tonight and it will be cold enough for snow by the time the first low pressure system arrives late Thursday night...

Another Round Of Rain, Then Snow Ahead?

An active pattern has set up this week and a return to winter weather later this week which could include the S-word. After a wet and chilly start to the week, another round of rain is set to move in Tuesday. Steady rain soaked Ocean City on Monday giving us about 1" of rain as a low pressure system moved up the coast. But we are not done yet. Another low pressure system will move through on Tuesday with another round of rain. The good news is that temperatures will be a bit milder.

Cold Air Takes A Break As Winter Begins

Winter has arrived officially today, but the good news is the unseasonably cold air will be leaving us for a while as we move toward the holidays and possibly into the New Year. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had a few bouts of Arctic Air pushing temperatures into the 30s and even 20s. Now the overall pattern has shifted which will favor milder air for our area through the holidays.
