Amnesty International of Cape May County will host its 23rd annual commemoration of the Tianenman uprising of 1989 on June 4 at the Bayside Center in Ocean City.

This is the 25th anniversary of the event in China and Amnesty is deeply honored to have Mr. Zhao Huaguang, a renowned poet/calligrapher, make a presentation. He is also a veteran of Tienanmen. He will be bringing several other speakers who, like him, are survivors of the massacre.

The Chinese government has purged all history/memory of this uprising. There is no way for people to tell their stories and keep the memory alive. Ocean City has become a prime venue for recording this history and meeting these brave people.

The Statue of Liberty was used as the icon of the uprising. The students, workers and ordinary people saw that she represented their highest goals of freedom, justice and democracy. We, as Americans, cannot let their hope fade.
